Importance of Fire fighting System in High-rise Buildings

High-rise buildings contains a noteworthy populace of residents and the signature nature of this kind of shape; don't give simple surfacing in case of fire for those residents. The result of fire in an elevated structure can be disastrous. Safety against Fire is an imperative duty at office spaces as well as at homes. Fire safety can be guaranteed by having Fire Fighting Equipment and legitimate Fire Protection. The Importance of Firefighting Equipment is an essential one to guarantee most useful protection against Fire.

The fruitful usage of Fire Protection System happens just when it is done on time. Moreover, the general population must know some fundamental data about the fire assurance for applying it appropriately. Fire Protection layout is the most important step in the construction of any new household or commercial project. Fire safety design is paramount to a building’s design and function, fire safety design features can help to evacuate a building in a safe manner to preserve life. Safer buildings will stand the test of time and shall not require expensive remedial works to meet future building regulations. Before submitting a design application to the Planning Authority, it is good practice to have your design proposal reviewed in relation to fire safety design. The investment in high quality architectural design ensuring fire safety in buildings is the best solution for new building projects in order to protect human life and financial investment.

The Fire Fighting layout drawing usually consists of three basic parts:-
  • A large store of water in the tank, either underground or on top of the building. The storage of water tanks is important so as to be used immediately at the time of emergency.
  • A specialized pumping system as it pumps in the water with extreme speed to put down as swiftly as it breaks.
  •  A large network of pipes ending in either Sprinklers or Hydrants to make the process more easy and quick.
Some of the major Fire fighting equipment’s are Fire Extinguisher, Fire Alarm, Firefighting Blankets, Fire Sprinklers and Fire Hose. Among them, Fire Sprinklers is the most effective and beneficial technique for both commercial and residential purpose. Sprinkler systems are intended either to control or suppress the fire.

A sprinkler is a nozzle attached to a system of funnels and introduced just underneath the roof of a room. Each sprinkler has a little glass bulb with a fluid in it. This bulb regularly hinders the stream of water. In a fire, the fluid in the bulb will wind up noticeably hot. It will then extend, and smash the glass bulb, evacuating the deterrent and making the water splash from the sprinkler. A sprinkler will, for the most part, be initiated rapidly in a fire - potentially before the fire station has been informed of the fire - and along these lines is exceptionally viable at putting out a fire in the early stages, before it develops into an extreme fire. Consequently, a sprinkler framework is viewed as exceptionally productive at putting out flames previously they spread and end up plainly unmanageable. Sprinkler frameworks are generally introduced in high or substantial structures and high fire risk occupancies.

Steel Deal In Reinforced Concrete

A widely known fact about concrete: It cannot be used alone as a building material as it has a high compression strength but a low tensile strength. Hence, if concrete alone is used in construction, there is a chance that such structure will collapse if introduced to higher load or force. Thus, a mechanism is required to provide strength to Concrete Structures. This mechanism is widely known as reinforced concrete in the language of Civil Engineering and Construction

Even though there are multiple options available for reinforcing concrete, the best option is steel. The reason for this is simple: it has several benefits compared to other materials.

Steel versus Aluminum

When it comes down to reinforcing steel, the two of the best-suited materials are aluminum and steel. Even though both have almost same physical characteristics, steel beats aluminum in case of thermal expansion. Material with high thermal expansion is used relatively less in reinforcing concrete as temperature changes affect such materials greatly causing it to expand and crack. Aluminum has higher thermal expansion compared to steel and hence it is used less compared to steel for reinforcement process.

  Other Benefits of using Steel
  • Ductility: Steel is highly ductile which means it can be easily deformed to take any shape as and when required. This property of steel is called tensile strength. It reduces the chances of a structure getting collapsed.
  • Modulus of elasticity: Steel has same Young’s modulus or modulus of elasticity(2.0 – 2.1 x10^5 N/mm2) so that it can withstand lengthwise tension or compression.
  • Thermal Expansion: The coefficient of thermal expansion for both steel and concrete are same. This ensures bond strength during thermal expansion preventing the bond failure.
  • Easy Recycling: Steel can be easily recycled making it more eco-friendly and cost-effective material.
  • Easy Welding: Steel can be welded easily making it the best material for fabrication (manufacturing) process.
  • Availability: Steel is a widely available material at cheaper rates compared to other ductile materials.

Role of Steel Detailing

The process of preparing ‘shop’ drawings for steel members in Reinforced Concrete is called rebar(reinforced bar) detailing. At first, the design engineer develops design drawings indicating the size of material, its orientation and location in 3D space, connection details, material specification, and lot more. These drawings are not informative enough for any contractor or manufacturer to start cutting the material. Thus, shop drawings are produced by a contractor to cut the material to exact size, length, shape, and place the bolt holes at the correct place.

Apart from this, there are detail drawings used to demonstrate regulations for assembly and junctions between the components.Steel Detail Drawings is used for Steel Construction Detailing to manufacture and erect steel members like columns, beams, trusses, handrails, etc. These drawings are critical to any construction project and they must be produced by steel detailers having sound knowledge of steel construction detailing.

The Finest Commercial Architectures in Auckland Listed by NZIA Awards 2017

Auckland, a city in New Zealand’s north island recognized as a Beta City or Global City and one of the reasons for this is its art and architecture. Auckland known as one of the most livable Building Design cities of the world comprises a heritage of stunningly beautiful architectures to please the eyes of its viewers. Being the largest urban city in New Zealand (NZ), Auckland comprises talented architects proving their skills through their Architecture Planning and Building Design Plan NZ.

New Zealand Institute of Architects (NZIA) has published a list of award-winning architectures for the year 2017 giving a delight to the world of architecture. Amongst these, Australis Nathan built by Peddle Thorp, Kauri Timber by Fearon Hay Architects Ltd and, Mason Bros. by Warren and Mahoney Architects Ltd classified as Commercial Architecture Auckland found their place in the list of 2017 New Zealand architecture awards.

2015 marked a fruitful year for Peddle Thorp, during which the whole process of restoration began for two buildings the Australis House and the Nathan Building giving the world an internally joined Commercial Architecture. After this restoration, it has welcomed international retailers like Chanel and H&M. The offices here gives a room for lawyers and other commercial tenants with beautiful interiors and pleasant view of the city.
Originally built in 1881, Kauri Timber is restored by Fearon Hay Architects Ltd to trade logs from the building. Well planned and executed, it marks the flow of natural sunlight in the offices along with the old sea wall exposure. It has been renovated to give skinny, tall version of the old version.

The Mason Bros. project by Warren and Mahoney Architects started with the goal of changing the old warehouse to a new version with an inclusion of a three-story development and a twist of a sawtooth roof while still retaining the earlier version of the warehouse. This seemingly dramatic building houses a large commercial space on three levels. This courageous renovation has retained the original character of building fabric which gives a remarkable example of Architecture Planning NZ.
The whole process of Architecture Planning and Execution is tiresome and requires skilled, talented architects to give a successful structure. Further, the development and maintenance process also involves several complexities. For example, The Subdivision Auckland Council has laid certain rules for the subdivision of the property that has to be followed if there is a requirement for the division of the property into separate legal titles. Henceforth, one can say “architecture” is a broad term as it plays a vital role in the building industry and everyone associated with it.

Silicon Engineering Consultants Limited New Zealand is one such firm providing services from talented and experienced architects who possess a taste of unique and extraordinary designs. Even though we are driven by modern technology, we provide timeless solutions. The prime goal of our organization is achieving acute client satisfaction with our quality services at affordable rates. We are a team of Architectural, Engineering and Construction experts not confined to a particular location but serving countries across the globe.

BIM Coordination convention from MEP viewpoint

Understanding the terms MEP and BIM

MEP: MEP stands for the Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing discipline of construction. The Mechanical part includes firefighting system and HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning). The Electrical part covers power supply and lighting system. The Plumbing part includes water supply and drainage management.

BIM: BIM is the acronym for Building Information Modeling. It refers to a process of creating working models (3D, 4D or 5D) to design, construct and manage the building information.

What is BIM Coordination?

To ensure all the aspects of MEP works in coordination with each other, there arises a need of determining clashes between them. Hence, BIM Coordination comes into play. BIM Coordination refers to a process of comparing various models so as to find out any clashes or conflicts taking place among various MEP elements on the field.

Why BIM Coordination?

Benefits of using BIM Coordination for MEP are as follows:
  • Avoid field conflicts prior to installation process
  • Provide an early insight into the project through visualization
  • Accuracy in designing
  • Increase in productivity
  • Reduction in cost
  • Timely delivery of the project
  • Accurate decision making

Role of Coordination Drawings

In order to maintain coordination between different aspects of MEP, we require special diagrams known as coordination drawings. Coordination drawings are produced by contractors that can be reproduced as per requirements. These MEP Coordination Drawings showcase the installation of components, materials, and products within all the mechanical and electrical spaces.

How to apply BIM coordination in MEP components

The process of coordinating MEP components is a tough job and it requires a higher rate of accuracy and precision as even a slight mistake may result in a substantial loss. The process involves following steps:
  • Analysis Phase: In this phase, the architects and modelers undergo rigorous analysis of the MEP designs and drawings. They collectively come down to a decision on how BIM coordination models will be made.
  • Creation Phase: Here, coordination models are created using software like Revit and AutoCAD. This will ensure integration of all the MEP elements in the model. This means the mechanical, electrical and plumbing elements are working in synchronization with each other.
  • Detection Phase: This phase involves preparing coordination drawings so as to detect the interference amongst the MEP elements. These include 3D and 4D coordinated BIM models to detect the clashes and fix the errors.
  • Modification Phase: It involves the creation of as-built drawings. As-built drawings provide information on site based changes and the modifications that are to be made in 3D models.

    Role of BIM Manager

In order to successfully complete the complex task of BIM Coordination, there has to be a BIM Manager who takes care of carrying out the different activities involved in BIM Coordination.
A BIM Manager takes following responsibilities:
  • Data Coordination: It involves tracking asset data, building information data, fabrication data and estimation data.
  • Model Coordination: This includes integration of models, content generation and management, element ownership and visibility.
  • Trade coordination: It requires scheduling coordination meetings, issue tracking, conflict resolution, and managing as-built records.
