Why should Steel Detailers Move from 2D CAD to 3D BIM Workflows to Remain Competitive?

Steel detailing is one of the most essential components in a long chain of creation — without it, schools, shopping malls and skyscrapers could never be completed. Being closely linked to the other providers in that chain is critical for the operations, but it can affect the business in fundamental ways: fortunes, workflows, and even the technologies we rely on are all interdependent.
As a result, a change that starts anywhere in that chain will eventually ripple all the way through it. That means the increasingly widespread use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and 3D workflows by designers, builders, and others in the industry will affect the detailing company as well — if it hasn’t already. BIM creates efficiency and users will get several benefits, the greatest potential of BIM is realized through its potential to cut down rework which eventually improves productivity.

BIM also minimize conflicts and changes during construction, clash detection is an integral part of BIM Modeling. Once the disciplines finish the work/ Model, the chances for clash to occur are high as it occurs when elements of different model occupy the same space. Clash Detection helps in the effective identification, inspection and reporting of interferences in 3D project model. It helps check completed or ongoing work and reduces the risk of human errors.
The need of Steel Detailing companies to switch from 2D CAD to 3D BIM is all the more necessary due to the vast importance of BIM.
The main points are as follows:-
  • To bring down production cost:
The Change from 2D to 3D BIM in construction projects is aimed to reduce cost and time. Steel detailing company does not keep the projects cost-effective compared to BIM where the workflow allow companies to estimate cost, reduce rework and eliminate production scrap.
  • Time for tool sharpening:
The necessities of implementing a 3D detailing solution is already explained as above. The move from 2D to 3D, however benefits workflows in ample ways for eg., Improved interoperability, increased efficiency, and a reduction in fabrication errors mean the software often pays for itself quickly.
  • Evolving Workflows
Prior to the implementation of 3D software and once the transition from 2D to 3D is complete, companies often find their detailing and fabrication workflows to be very different.

With Advance BIM Software the checking time has been greatly reduced and there’s confidence in the output. Advance steel is the fundamental change in the construction process where one can look at the building model from all ends and right through design and drafting.
The Chain of Change

What’s reshaping the industry isn’t just 3D model–based technology, but also the ways that technology is being used to connect project teams and to keep data moving smoothly from one phase to the next. Many contractors now prefer — or require — that the members of their project teams use BIM, so detailing companies that haven’t yet determined their BIM strategy risk losing out on contracts.

Structural Fabrication: Understanding the Process & Importance

Fabrication is an important process for manufacturing. It is used for manufacturing a variety of products from clips to airplane parts. Fabrication can be of following three types:
  • Commercial
  • Structural
  • Industrial
Structural Fabrication refers to the metal works carried out during the building process. It accounts for creating components used by Manufacturers, Shops, Buildings, and Skyscrapers. This structural fabrication process requires a number of steps and a number of techniques to get completed.

 Structural Fabrication Process:
Even though most of the structural fabrication processes focus on metal shaping and cutting, it goes beyond this for a successful fabricated product. The process involves design, rendering and finally a finished product.

 1. Design:

The design is the first and foremost stage of a Structural Project. It is also a critical one. Designing involves the creation of prototypes and models using standard technology like CAD (computer-aided design). This allows for creating 3D models even before the actual fabrication begins.

Design involves multiple specifications to be considered for a proper functioning of the products. These specifications like size and shape must be accurately noted by the structural designers. They create drawings in which everything is noted on point. In the case of commercial projects, the Commercial Structural Fabrication Drawings are much more complex and demands a high level of accuracy from designers.

2. Fabrication:
The actual fabrication begins after design phase. In this phase, the component is manufactured using techniques like cutting, shaping, welding and alike process. It requires tools such as shears, mills, nibblers, and lathes.

3. Finishing or Assembling:
The last step of structural fabrication is finishing/assembling. It ensures the strength of the product and makes it ready to use. Finishing is done with techniques like grinding and deburring.

Finishing also involves printing and marking specifications like company logo, measurements of product and other information.

Structural Drawings for Fabrication Process:

These are the drawings that play an important role in structural fabrication. All the detailed drawings and plans developed by the engineers, detailers, and drafters for effective development of structure fall into this category.

Among these, Commercial Building Steel Fabrication Drawings, Commercial Structural Fabrication Drawings and Steel Detailing play an important role in commercial construction. These drawings also require instructions, plans, sketches, and specifications which are supplied by the architects, and structural engineers. Also, steel detailing is a special concern and it accounts for the execution of steel detailing services.

Role of 3D models in structural drawings:
  • 3D models show in-depth information such as spacing between the elements, size, and shape, quality of bolts and welds, etc.
  • It also allows putting constraints on the design to reduce the construction risks.
  • It aids in better project design bid.
  • It safeguards the integrity by considering minutest requirements for elements like grids and beams.
  • It also allows for easy modification of the designs if required.
