4 Reasons Why You Need MEP Shop Drawings

MEP stands for Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing Engineering. These three fields include the systems that make building environment fit for us. Mechanical, electrical and plumbing in MEP Consulting Engineering is discussed together due to the high degree of interaction among them and to reduce the clash- a general problem when electrical, mechanical and plumbing systems are created in separately.

MEP Outsourcing Services bring many advantages to construction companies: reduced installation costs by optimizing material requirements, obtaining high performance and code compliance.

Let us understand all the three technical disciplines of MEP Engineering.

M: Mechanical Engineering

Different types of mechanical systems are used in residential and commercial buildings. However, the main three types of Mechanical design works are:

  • Space Heating
  • Air Conditioning
  • Mechanical Ventilation
All the systems keep the temperature and humidity under control and give comfort and health. Mechanical ventilator ensures that fresh air is regularly supplied in the building to keep the air pollutant at safe levels.

Along with fixing HAVC equipment correctly, MEP HAVC Shop Drawings also include setting the best routes for heat distribution systems: air ducts, hydronic piping or steam piping, whichever applies for the project.

E: Electrical Engineering

In the high rise and huge buildings, the most challenging part of the electrical design is defining the optimal routes for cables and wiring.  Since electrical wiring requires less space and can be routed easily, it is more flexible than mechanical systems. With the help of MEP Shop Drawings, wiring can be laid out while minimizing total circuit lengths, bypassing clashes and interferences. HAVC requires close collaboration between mechanical and electrical technicians during the MEP HAVC Shop Drawing process. Mechanical engineers determine heating and cooling loads while electrical engineers create the electrical circuit that allows these devices to run safely.

P: Plumbing Engineering

Plumbing installations also require numerous technical specifications. Like mechanical and electrical connections, plumbing needs laying out complicated piping routes, and MEP Shop Drawings are extensively used by construction companies to simplify the process.

Plumbing installations cooperate with both mechanical and electrical systems at many points, such as:

  •    In High-rise buildings water booster pumps are required to run electricity.
  •    The hot water supply systems get their heat either from a boiler or from an electric heater.

Now let us see the fields where high quality of MEP engineering can influence the construction or renovation project:

  • Energy Saving: MEP engineers can improve designs and can implement a number of energy management methods in order to reduce energy usage.
  • Building Automation: From lighting, security, fire alarms, to building’s HVAC systems, effective MEP Engineering services can build a centralized automated system for every need.
  • Water Conservation: Mechanical and plumbing system plans can reduce the quantity of water your building uses, and in turn, lower your water bill.
  • Indoor Environmental Quality: The MEP engineers can improve the Indoor environmental of the building by maximizing the use of sunlight, optimizing HVAC systems for ventilation and moisture control to eliminate odours and airborne pathogens.

Mechanical Drafting Service: What Is It? Why Is It Important?

Drafting is an engineering drawing of an object or machine to visually communicate how it functions or how it is constructed. It is vital for communicating design ideas in several industries. Earlier drafting was carried out using instruments and tools. However, with the advancement in technology the mechanical drafting techniques have changed. Now, engineers and draftsmen use computer-aided design(CAD) concept to generate these drawings. Mechanical 2D drafting shows designs for complex components or instruments.
Role of CAD in Drafting:
With the advent of technology, design and drafting tasks have simplified. With the use of software, several basic drawings objects are already available to the design professionals and hence their job has become less complex.

This has allowed them to use their valuable time for research work and optimizing the designs for betterment. CAD has contributed a lot in improvising the results and providing quality services.

Use of Mechanical CAD Services in construction projects:

Mechanical CAD services are more so often related to HVAC systems in construction projects. Heating, cooling, and ventilation of a building play an important role in any construction project. Compromising on these components will ruin a beautifully designed building as it lacks proper ventilation, heating, and cooling.

3D Modeling in this field provides proper planning for ceiling and floor spaces. Other diagrams in mechanical engineering include:

  • General arrangement drawings

  • Schematic drawings

  • Fabrication drawings

  • Detail drawings

  • Installation drawings

  • Assembly drawings

BIM Coordination convention from MEP viewpoint

Understanding the terms MEP and BIM

MEP: MEP stands for the Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing discipline of construction. The Mechanical part includes firefighting system and HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning). The Electrical part covers power supply and lighting system. The Plumbing part includes water supply and drainage management.

BIM: BIM is the acronym for Building Information Modeling. It refers to a process of creating working models (3D, 4D or 5D) to design, construct and manage the building information.

What is BIM Coordination?

To ensure all the aspects of MEP works in coordination with each other, there arises a need of determining clashes between them. Hence, BIM Coordination comes into play. BIM Coordination refers to a process of comparing various models so as to find out any clashes or conflicts taking place among various MEP elements on the field.

Why BIM Coordination?

Benefits of using BIM Coordination for MEP are as follows:
  • Avoid field conflicts prior to installation process
  • Provide an early insight into the project through visualization
  • Accuracy in designing
  • Increase in productivity
  • Reduction in cost
  • Timely delivery of the project
  • Accurate decision making

Role of Coordination Drawings

In order to maintain coordination between different aspects of MEP, we require special diagrams known as coordination drawings. Coordination drawings are produced by contractors that can be reproduced as per requirements. These MEP Coordination Drawings showcase the installation of components, materials, and products within all the mechanical and electrical spaces.

How to apply BIM coordination in MEP components

The process of coordinating MEP components is a tough job and it requires a higher rate of accuracy and precision as even a slight mistake may result in a substantial loss. The process involves following steps:
  • Analysis Phase: In this phase, the architects and modelers undergo rigorous analysis of the MEP designs and drawings. They collectively come down to a decision on how BIM coordination models will be made.
  • Creation Phase: Here, coordination models are created using software like Revit and AutoCAD. This will ensure integration of all the MEP elements in the model. This means the mechanical, electrical and plumbing elements are working in synchronization with each other.
  • Detection Phase: This phase involves preparing coordination drawings so as to detect the interference amongst the MEP elements. These include 3D and 4D coordinated BIM models to detect the clashes and fix the errors.
  • Modification Phase: It involves the creation of as-built drawings. As-built drawings provide information on site based changes and the modifications that are to be made in 3D models.

    Role of BIM Manager

In order to successfully complete the complex task of BIM Coordination, there has to be a BIM Manager who takes care of carrying out the different activities involved in BIM Coordination.
A BIM Manager takes following responsibilities:
  • Data Coordination: It involves tracking asset data, building information data, fabrication data and estimation data.
  • Model Coordination: This includes integration of models, content generation and management, element ownership and visibility.
  • Trade coordination: It requires scheduling coordination meetings, issue tracking, conflict resolution, and managing as-built records.
