Rebar: A Better Option Over Steel In Construction Project

Rebar is an acronym for reinforced steel bar and it is one of the fundamental components of construction today. Rebar has a high tensile strength and hence it is used along with concrete for building seismic structures. Even though steel is an option used for building, rebar is widely used today. And why is it so? It is due to the advantages it offers in comparison to steel. Let us look at all those benefits of using rebar in construction:

1. Corrosion resistance:
The buildings that experience heavy rainfall require resistance to corrosion. Rebar offers high corrosion resistance. Hence, it is perfect for use in heavy rainfall areas and irrigation fields. Rebar does not have effects of chlorine on it. This makes rebar a best-suited material for dams or reservoirs where the chlorinated water always remains in contact with it.


2. Extremely durable:
The steel is much more fragile than rebar. The chances of breakage increase for steel members due to external forces or climatic forces during the time of welding. Rebar does not get affected easily like steel members. Moreover, rebar retains its shape when the fire is applied during welding.

3. Longevity:
Rebar is as much as five times stronger than steel when dealing with environmental impacts acting on it. Since the impacts of the environment are less on rebar, it can be used for structures requiring a longer lifetime. 


4. A good alternative for special requirements:
Some critical features in construction require materials that do not need frequent repairs. While constructing such structures, rebar can be used instead of steel so as it does not require repairs in future for a long time. Rebar remains immune to environmental attacks and hence it is a good choice for certain structures.

5. Economic:
Rebar is more economical than steel. It has attributes like high mechanical strength and more resistance to corrosion making its thickness less compared to other materials. Hence, the weight of rebar decreases without compromising on its quality. A lightweight rebar is more convenient to use for transportation. The cost of transportation reduces for lightly weighted rebar compared to heavy steel making rebar a more economical option.
